Professional Class: Flexer & Sandiland

Flexer & Sandiland company members Yael Flexer and Luke Birch will be teaching class throughout the week. The company teaches a dynamic release based class. Focusing on skeletal connections and imagery to find an ease and flow of movement through the body. Classes begin with exploratory work alone or with a partner and then move on to formal exercises that build towards driving movement sequences. Emphasis is placed on momentum, inversion and an expansive use of space combined with core strength.

Yael Flexer

Award winning choreographer Yael Flexer is co-artistic director of Flexer & Sandiland. Originally formed by Yael as Choreographer in Residence at The Place, London, to date Yael has created 12 full-length productions for the company, touring throughout the UK and internationally. The company has been commissioned to create live and/or interactive works for among others: Brighton Digital Festival, Sadler’s Wells, Woking Dance Festival, The Barbican, London, Malta European City of Culture and Cinedans (Amsterdam, The Netherlands). Flexer & Sandiland recent touring productions include Disappearing Acts (2016) & Weightless (2012-14). Alongside the company is touring the digital installations Weighting (2016-Ongoing) & Trip Hazard (2013-ongoing) & Gravity Shift (2010-Ongoing). F&S have recently been commissioned by The Brighton Festival to create The Hum (2017) a sited work and Smartphone app. Yael regularly leads choreographic Labs, workshops and professional training in the UK and internationally Yael holds a doctorate from The University of Chichester and also co-directs mapdance, the University of Chichester’s postgraduate touring company.

Luke Birch

Luke began his dance training at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance and then went on to complete his BA Hons degree at Laban in 2008. In 2009 he joined post graduate dance company Edge at The Place/LCDS performing works by H2 Dance and Jeremy Nelson. Professionally he has performed for Yael Flexer, Nic Sandiland, Angela Praed, Charles Linehan, Dog Kennel Hill Project, Rosemary Lee (Rehearsal Director/Performer), Punchdrunk, Florence Peake, Rahel Vonmoos and Saffy Setohy. He has also performed on visual art/gallery based projects with Pablo Bronstein, Martin Creed and Aya Kobayashi for Tate Modern and Tate Britain and a restaging of Yvonne Rainer's Trio A and the Mirror City exhibition (Florence Peake and Nicola Conibere) both at The Hayward Gallery. His choreographic work (both independently and on behalf of Yael Flexer) has been shown at Saddlers Wells (Damn Fine Dance at Elixir Festival), The Place (with Yael Flexer for cando2), Opening Ceremony of the Ivy Arts Centre, Move it 2016 and Arts Depot.
